Supporting Children with Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
At The EBSA Support Service at The £2 Tuition Hub, we support children and young people who are currently unable to attend school due to emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA). Our approach is flexible and built around each learner’s individual needs. For many, this service provides a much-needed bridge back into education, one that feels manageable and encouraging.
The EBSA Support Service is an extension of The £2 Tuition Hub, which has supported over 20,000 learners across the UK. It was developed in response to requests from schools and local authorities for a version of our high-quality teaching that includes features essential for on-roll pupils, such as attendance reporting, engagement tracking and one-to-one learning mentor support.
The service is suitable for children who remain on roll but are currently unable to attend school. Some learners have EHCPs, while others are in the early stages of accessing support. Children can begin with small steps, perhaps watching a short recorded lesson or receiving a message from their learning mentor via their dashboard, and build at a pace that works for them.
There is no lengthy referral process, no formal diagnosis required, and support can usually begin quickly. Schools or local authorities can request access to the service on behalf of a child or family.
Safeguarding is at the heart of what we do. All tutors and staff are fully DBS checked and follow clear, robust safeguarding procedures. Every live session is supported by a trained moderator who ensures the space remains calm, focused and well-managed. Peer messaging is disabled, and all interaction is monitored by our safeguarding team. Our Designated Safeguarding Lead oversees the service, with systems in place to track attendance, engagement and wellbeing.
Our learning offer is designed to spark interest, rebuild confidence and support re-engagement with education. We offer a wide variety of live and recorded sessions, from core academic subjects to creative and interest-based classes such as forensics and pony club. Classes are pressure-free and welcoming, with no expectations around camera use or verbal participation.
Each learner also receives support from a dedicated Learning Mentor. These weekly one-to-one sessions provide encouragement, emotional support and achievable goal setting. Mentors aim to build trust and connection over time, offering consistency and a friendly presence as children begin to re-engage with learning.
We work closely with you throughout. We’re happy to provide updates on engagement, join review meetings and contribute to EHCP documentation. We can also support reintegration planning, whether that’s a return to school, a move to alternative provision or a hybrid arrangement that continues to meet the child’s needs. Some pupils stay with us longer term to work toward qualifications such as GCSEs.
We are a recognised alternative provision in several local authorities, and our service can be used as part of Section 19, EOTAS or EHCP arrangements to help schools and local authorities meet their legal responsibilities.
Pricing is kept accessible. Each session is £5. Packages include up to 5, 10 or 15 classes per week and come with live access, indefinite access to class recordings, attendance reports, engagement summaries and weekly learning mentor support (included in the 15-hour package or available for £15 per week with the 5- and 10-hour options).
